Ossian

The Peripheral

Ossian Murphy is a technical and operational associate of Lev Zubov and Ash whose work ranges from managing security systems to handling a dangerous device and preparing equipment for Flynne Fisher. He occupies a consequential middle ground in the future-world group: close enough to its machinery to act on it, yet often seen through the consequences of those actions, from disabled elevators to a pram that cannot safely be opened.

Role and Working Relationships

Ossian operates alongside Ash and Lev in the practical work surrounding the stub. He is not merely an observer of their technology: when Wilf Netherton searches for Ash at a closed bar, he learns that Ossian has shut down the elevator and probably other systems as well. The shutdown keeps the operator of Anton Zubov’s sparring partner on the same level, showing how Ossian’s control of infrastructure can shape the movement and access of others.

His relationship with Ash includes frank disagreement. At one point Wilf hears only Ash’s side of an argument with Ossian, carried on in their current faux-Slavic iteration of a shared coded language. The exchange establishes both their familiarity and the privacy of their working communication: even their disagreements are conducted in a form that excludes outsiders. Later, Ash caws briefly to him in a coarser birdsong, and he responds by lowering the lid over the peppermint pistols. Their exchanges are terse, but coordinated.

Ossian is also assigned to Lev’s political and corporate activity. Lev says that acquiring majority stakes in the two firms most directly responsible for enabling his election is a matter in progress, and that Ossian is handling it. The statement places him beyond purely technical work: he participates in the acquisition strategy by which Lev seeks to consolidate political influence through ownership.

Security and Technical Operations

The security operation at the Fisher property depends on an extensive drone net. Reece identifies the men posted around the site, including Carlos by the trailer, and describes twenty active units with twenty in reserve. Flynne understands that the drones fly in a repeating, synchronized pattern and that three men each monitor a third of the property. This is the larger system Ossian’s world helps make possible: surveillance is distributed, automated, and organized as a routine perimeter rather than a single guard’s watch.

Ossian’s handling of infrastructure is equally practical at the level of a single access point. When Wilf tries the steel oval at the closed bar, nothing happens; Ossian is out of sight, occupied in an argument with Ash. The failed attempt is one small indication that the environment’s access systems are controlled by people who can make doors and services unavailable without explanation to those outside their circle.

His work also reaches into the aftermath of dangerous technology. After projected assemblers escape from a Russian pram, the device has damaged the leather upholstery in Lev’s father’s car and affected the biological elements of a manipulator. Ossian explains that he and the others have managed to trigger the assemblers only once, when Wilf was present, and that turning them off required serious effort. The account makes containment, rather than deployment, the central problem: the system cannot simply be reloaded, and its remaining assemblers cannot be replenished locally.

The Russian Pram and Its Consequences

The Russian pram is both a technical puzzle and a persistent threat. It is being taken apart in Lev’s stub, but Ossian describes how a gentle initial attempt to handle it provoked a response. Projected assemblers emerged, consuming much of the car’s leather upholstery and damaging part of the group’s equipment. The pram’s danger lies not in a single spectacular attack but in its capacity to react to interference and continue operating without an ordinary off switch.

Ossian’s account gives the device a disturbing duration: it had apparently been waiting for someone to try to remove it, and the first activation used only a few thousand assemblers out of millions. The group has now secured both the pram and another object, but the scale of what remains makes that success provisional. Ossian emphasizes the limits of their control, including the fact that the assemblers cannot be reloaded this side of Novosibirsk Oblast.

The incident continues to have material consequences after the immediate danger has been contained. Ossian later waits beside Ash’s tent with a narrow rosewood case, while Lev’s six-wheeled Bentley is away with a specialist. The interior has been rearranged to carry the devices, and five meters of leather are being cloned to repair the damaged upholstery. Technical containment therefore leaves a visible trail of repair, transport, and precautions; the threat is not erased simply because the immediate release has stopped.

Political and Local Context

Ossian’s assignments take place against a sharp disparity between the future group’s resources and the local economy of Clanton County. Lev describes a county where illicit molecular drug synthesis is the most viable economy, the sheriff is in the pay of the most successful synthesist, and an earlier killing was followed by payment to make the consequences disappear. Janice likewise explains that Burton is paying Corbell Pickett from the money made in Clanton, and that anyone manufacturing drugs in the county pays Corbell a share.

Within that setting, the future group’s technical security and corporate maneuvers do not operate in a political vacuum. Burton’s side has an arrangement with Corbell, while Lev pursues control of firms linked to an election and Ossian carries out part of that acquisition work. Later, when federal Homes personnel and vehicles converge on the region, the public account casts the action as a campaign against the remnants of Pickett’s drug empire, despite the role Burton, his friend, and a Veterans Administration prosthesis played in stopping it. Ossian is not identified as a participant in the local confrontation, but his political and technical work belongs to the same larger contest over who controls institutions, security, and the story told about force.

Work with Flynne and Later Actions

Ossian’s operational relationship with Flynne becomes especially clear through the peppermint pistols. Ash says the group has addressed Flynne’s lack of neoprimitivist curatorial language, and Ossian opens a rosewood pistol case. Later, when Ash arrives in her chauffeur outfit with Ossian behind her in a black leather coat, he approaches Flynne while keeping clear of the candy-cane barrel. He places the wooden case on her chair, takes the gun from her hand, settles it in its felted recess, and closes the lid. The sequence is controlled and deliberate: his role is to manage the equipment safely while Flynne is armed.

The case also marks a practical change in how the group handles the weapons. Ossian explains that the interior was redesigned to carry them, since he would not want one kept in his pocket even though he was confident it had been disabled. The devices took substantial work to turn off, and the group managed to release assemblers only once, during Wilf’s presence. The pistols thus echo the larger lesson of the pram: disabling an advanced device does not make it ordinary or remove the need for careful storage and handling.

At the end of the supplied scenes, Ossian follows Flynne down the stairs in single file. She asks what Conner is doing to another person, and Ossian is behind her as she moves toward the next situation. The evidence leaves his precise next action unstated, but his position in the group remains consistent: he accompanies its members into uncertain conditions, managing equipment and systems as events unfold.
